The Tower South Ridge | 2011-05-14
|
I decided to go to The Tower south ridge via Rummel Ridge (GR190334). I was hoping that I could make it all the way to The Tower’s south peak, but I didn’t believe it was doable at this moment, so I aimed maybe south peak but more like a high point along the ridge. Anyhow I still made it to near 2900 elevation.
I followed ski tracks from trailhead. At waypoint “Cutline” (GR183326, page 3), I went off trail and took the cutline to get to the other side of a creek. I had to lose some elevation but in return this saved some distance. Right about the same elevation on the other side of the creek, I also went off cutline and started bushwhacking to Rummel Ridge. Bushwhacking here is hardly bushwhacking so don’t worry. Soon I came out of treeline and a gentle hill lead me to the Rummel.
From Rummel, I switched to south ridge of The Tower. Again I had to lose some elevation but it wasn’t much at all. Maybe 50 m? To get to the ridge, I had to walk across a nice slope. I am not sure how it is in winter but it was pretty safe in terms of avalanche at this time around. Snow was already blown away and ridge was rather snow-less for a while. As I kept continue to go up higher, the ridge became narrower and narrower. Definitely this trip switched from hiking to scrambling.
Once I get closer to the south summit and sew the steepness of the ridge and amount of snow up there, I decided to stop.
