Above stats does not include our detours.
The last day of Auguest long weekend, the last of the three 2770 meterers, Sheol Mountain at Lake Lousie area (Bosworth 2771 m, Wapta Mtn 2778 m, and Sheol 2779 m). The weather at our campsite in Yoho was clear and I was expecting Lake Louise would be the same but no. It was cloudy.
We made two mistakes that day. The first mistake was we misread the book. We thought turn off point from trial was after Lake Annette. When we arrived at waypoint “Sign 4”, I had a big doubt about it but since English native Shaun read the book, we continued forward, but after Annette, it became apparent we were going wrong way, so we had to backtrack to “Sign 4”. Tricky part of this was the turn off trail was fainted for first 20 m and we barely could see it. The trail became as wide as main trail after 20 m but park peeps blocked the trail by putting cut down trees on trial to indicate it was not the place to be. The second mistake was we took a wrong avalanche gully (page 2). Well I blame clouds for that… We didn’t have visual on where we were supposed to aim because upper part was cloud covered.
Nonetheless we were able to find the way back on track to the summit ridge (page 7). The highest point of this ridge was actually right before a dip and not where the summit cairn was. Does this mean the true summit is not a true summit? The dip can be got around by going right (south). We used ledges and steps. Even though it’s only moderate scrambling, layers of broken shale on top of ledges made this descent little more difficult (page 9). After this we followed the ridge all the way to the end of the ridge where the summit cairn was. A pencil was missing from summit register, if you read this trip report and thinking to do Sheol, please bring a pencil!
For descent, we went the same way until the dip. At the bottom of the dip we could clearly see the gully went all the way down, so instead of going up again, we took the gully (page 13).
