Not Joy
  • Location: Kananaskis Country (Kananaskis Lakes)
  • Activity: Rock Climbing

Shaun and I decided to climb a trad. route called Joy which is SW facing slab on south end of Mount Indefatigable. I'm sure many of you have seen it from Upper Kananaskis Lake Circuit trail. Now you might wonder why does the title say "Not Joy"? Well that is because....

A long time ago, two brave but not too bright souls came to a very special mountain called Mount Indefatigable. The duo wanted to have fun at Joy, but they found out that, this route doesn't have good cracks to set protections. Cracks were often too wide and too shallow. Sometimes cams popped out by simply pulling rope. Then they got hit by storm. Then the Sun set and the last pitch was complete dark... Two days later one of them worked his not-so-bright brain very vary hard and discovered the route they were on wasn't Joy. They were completely off-route from the get-go.

That's how the title "Not Joy" came from. If you wonder, you can mouseover the picture to see the route Joy and our route.

This wasn't mentioned in route description…

I saw dark clouds forming around Aster Lake. I saw rain hitting the K-Lake surface. Then I got hit by the storm. The wind pushed me around. I had to find a small ledge where I could secure myself while holding tight on to the belaying rope. Couldn't hear or see Shaun. Wasn't sure what's going on, but he kept pulling the rope even after the rope was fully extended. "No more rope Shaun" I thought, but that was signal from Shaun telling me I was on belay and he was ready for me to start climbing.

A moment of peacefulness after the storm and still believing in our route is correct.

After the last pitch. Shaun seemed tired.

Passing midnight. I didn't realize this supposed to be a 2-day trip. Still had no doubt about our route. My teacher also taught me once, ignorance is bliss.
